Seattle Beauty™ Tip: a well-proven anti-aging herbal blend from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

What is Qi Gui Blend

Qi Gui Blend, a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) composition including Astragalus membranaceus and Angelica sinensis, is one of the oldest and best known anti-aging herbal formulations in China. Recorded in Chinese medicine book “Chen Shu-yan Book of Gynecology” published from 1127 to 1131 BC, the blend has been used for over one thousand years for its anti-aging and beauty-promoting effects.

Qi Gui Blend Comprises of?

Traditionally, Qi Gui Blend comprises a mixture of two anti-aging herbs, Astragalus membranaceus and Angelica sinensis, at a 3/1 ratio. For example, a blend of 90 grams would contain Astragalus membranaceus root powder (60g) and Angelica sinensis root powder (20g). For anti-aging purpose, the blend is taken 3 grams per dosage and twice a day. I will discuss the herbs, Astragalus membranaceus and Angelica sinensis, in details.

The Seattle BeautyTM blog series. In a nutshell, the two herbs, individually and collectively, are well recognized for their anti-aging effects and both have excellent safety profile as staple food items in Chinese diet and common herbal ingredients for TCM compositions.

Astragalus membranaceus

Astragalus membranaceus is an important anti-aging herb often used in Chinese medicine. Rich in anti-oxidant, the herb is known to promote blood circulation, boost immune system and is anti-inflammatory. Modern pharmacological study also showed that Astragalus membranaceus possesses telomerase-activating effect and therefore has the potential to slow-down the aging process.

Angelica sinensis

Also know as the “woman’s ginseng,” Angelica sinensis is one of the most widely used Chinese herbs.  The herb contains anti-oxidants (phenols and flavonoids), immune-boosting polysaccharides, triterpene glycosides such as the astragalosides, various amino acids, organic acids, vitamins, essential oils, and minerals. Modern pharmacology study suggests that Angelica sinensis boosts immune system, suppresses cancer cell growth, and promotes wound healing.  In Chinese herbal medicine, the herb is used to stimulate blood circulation to the skin to promote a healthy complexion.
