Are you thinking about trying apple cider vinegar (ACV)? You’ve likely read an article or two about this superfood or heard positive reviews from friends or people at the gym about it helping their weight management journey or supporting healthy digestion. Many of these benefits have been scientifically studied. Keep reading for the lowdown on ACV shots and learn about an easy way to boost your health.

What is an ACV Shot?

An ACV shot is a single, prepared dose of ACV that can be taken in one gulp or bite. ACV is fermented apple juice and may have many health benefits, especially when taken daily. ACV shots are commonly made with liquid ACV mixed with other ingredients, like juice or sweeteners, to make them more palpable. (If using straight ACV, always dilute with water or juice.)

Another type of ACV shot is an ACV gummy. These are gummies with added ACV; here at Seattle Gummy, our ACV shot gummy has the highest dose of ACV out of any other gummies. Many people prefer gummy ACV shots because they taste better than liquid ACV and are easier to take; no mixing or small bottle that you need to put in the recycling.

Benefits of ACV Shots

1. Digestion

Many people find ACV helpful for digestive complaints like gas, bloating, and constipation. To help ease bloating and gas, this doctor recommends taking an ACV shot or two before you eat.

2. Blood Sugar and weight management

Another reason people take ACV shots is to help stabilize blood sugar levels. It’s thought that when an ACV shot is taken before enjoying a high-carb meal, the ACV helps your stomach empty slowly, which means carbs are hitting your small intestine and then your bloodstream less quickly. This may be able to help people who are on a weight management journey or who need to support their blood sugar health.

While more research is warranted, a couple of small studies have found positive associations between weight loss and using ACV. A 2009 study showed “modest” weight loss results of 2-4 pounds after a few months of taking ACV. More recently, a small study where participants restricted their calories was divided into two groups: one who took ACV and one who didn’t. Both groups succeeded, but the group that took ACV had the best results.

3. Gut bacteria

One way that ACV supports health is through its clinically demonstrated antimicrobial properties. One study shows ACV helped break down harmful bacteria like Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Candida albicans. This study also states that “ACV has multiple antimicrobial potential with clinical therapeutic implications.”. The healthy bacteria in your gut are linked to overall health in many ways, including support of digestion and immunity.

ACV has also been shown effective against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). ACV acts by compromising a microbe’s structures and then changes the way it can work, effectively disabling the cell.

4. Heart health

One study found that ACV has a “significant favorable effect” on blood lipid levels and FPG levels, which are markers for various cardiovascular diseases after test subjects ingested ACV for a little less than eight weeks. And, in healthy individuals, it increased other good health markers. Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the number one cause of early death worldwide. More than 17 million deaths were due to CVD, according to the World Health Organization, with an expected 23.6 million more by 2030.

Is a Shot of Apple Cider Vinegar a Day Healthy?

Yes, absolutely! ACV is a food used as a nutritional supplement, making a daily dose the ideal way to use ACV. As discussed above, ACV offers the body many benefits. Taking it every day gives your body a steady source of its health-supporting properties, allowing the body to do the daily, ongoing work of maintaining health. A quick note about taking straight ACV: it is very acidic, so dilute your shot with water or juice. Taking straight, undiluted ACV like a shot is not recommended because plain vinegar can hurt your teeth and esophagus.
