What is a Baobab Tree

Baobab is a tree that grows in Africa, Australia, and the Middle East. The fruit is found inside hard pods that hang upside down from the tree. Baobab fruit is edible and has a citrus flavor.   Baobab is “wild-harvested.” It is taken from its natural environment and dried naturally. The seeds are removed and ground into a baobab powder.

Baobab powder is traditionally used in foods.  It is rich in nutrients such as vitamin C, potassium, carbohydrates and phosphorus.  A teaspoon of baobab powder contains about 2 grams of soluble fiber, 136.4 milligrams of Vitamin C, 0.352 mg of vitamin B1 (thiamin), 0.227 mg of vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) and 10 mg of calcium.

The vitamin C level in baobab is said to be 10 times that of oranges.  Because of its high vitamin C level, baobab is believed to contribute energy release, support immune system, increase general hydration and skin health.

Babab powder is almost 50% fiber, which includes two thirds soluble and one third insoluble.  The soluble fibers found in baobab are reported to exert prebiotic effects, promoting the growth of healthy bacteria in the gut.  As a result, baobab has traditionally been used in African populations to relieve diarrhea, constipation, and dysentery.

Baobab leaves are also rich in calcium and the pulp and leaves have antioxidant properties.  A study conducted by Oxford Brookes University found that polyphenol-rich baobab fruit extract, baked in bread, reduced starch digestion and glycemic response in humans. In addition, the polyphenols in baobab are reported to have antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antimalarial, antidiarrheal, antiviral, and antioxidant properties, and to be useful in treating or preventing anemia and asthma.
