Back in college years, I went through a “red hair” phase – I was fascinated by my friend’s warm red hair gleaming beautifully in the sunlight and had decided to dye my naturally black hair to red. That was the first time I used a chemical dye – I could still remember the chocking chemical smell and wondered why the heck anyone would be willingly to put that thing on the head.
I remember that when I was little my grandma would help me to dye my fingernails bright red with a few special flowers picked from her garden. I wondered if the same blend of flower dyes would also dye my hair red. I wished that I’ve had the wisdom then to record what flowers she used. So I went looking for the natural dye.
It turned out that preparing a natural dye is an ancient technique originated in Asia. The dye is usually used in clothes, but this can also be used to color hair or fingernail. Bright colored plants including plant parts such as flowers, fruits and roots, vegetable, and herbs are often used. Among the vegetables, beet and carrot are most commonly used. Among the herbs, henna is most commonly used. Here are a few natural hair dye tips.
Henna hair dye
Use finely ground henna powder and let it soak overnight in warm water. Apply the paste on the hair and let it act for two hours. Rinse well and feel your hair shine with a unique reddish hue. Add saffron to accentuate the red color. Add walnut shell to create a shimmering golden gleam.
Vegetable hair dye
Slowly cook rosemary, walnut shells, chamomile and sage in water for at least 1 hour. Apply the moist mixture on your hair and let it dry. Rinse the hair first with apple cider vinegar and then with cold water—this will add a beautiful shine to your hair.
Natural plant dyes are excellent replacement for the store bought chemical dyes and there are as many options to create as plant world colors. Give them a try – you won’t regret it.
